How to Style: Harem Pants

Harem pants were first introduced to the Western World around 1910 by designer Paul Poiret in an effort to ‘liberate’ this part of the world’s female fashion. The inspiration for this baggy style of pant, caught in a the ankle, came from the Middle East.

Today I believe it was the live action movie, “Aladdin” that has brought this style back. You can thank Princess Jasmine. So here are some ways to style these beautiful pants if you want to incorporate (or even if you just want to try something new) this Disney Princess’ style into your wardrobe but don’t quite know how.

Of course there are all kinds of harem pants. Some are bright and colorful. Others are printed and of course if you want to try a more subtle approach to the style you can go with a solid. Here I am styling them in black and leopard. Both are from Victoria’s Secret.

The simplest way to style harem pants is by throwing on a t-shirt and knotting it in the front or simply tuck in a fitted t-shirt. Then add some sandals, flats, or heels…whichever you are more comfortable with. This is a great alternative to the traditional t-shirt and jeans or a great way to feel like you’re wearing sweatpants BUT oh so chic.

Next, pop on a denim jacket over that t-shirt and you’re ready to transition to fall. You can even pair this outfit with some booties for fall and throw on a scarf for those really chilly days.

Prefer to wear a bodysuit so your top stays tucked in? I know I like not having to worry about my shirt coming un-tucked. Bonus points for some embellished, chic flats.

Now to build off the bodysuit and pant combo, add a long jacket with clean lines or a lacy cardigan for a romantic look. Add a bold necklace or layer some dainty pieces. You can keep it more casual with flats or you can dress it up with heels. The choice is yours!

The world is your runway so rock it with confidence – the ultimate accessory.
